BHX MOD SOC MAP_ Glossary : Great Britain

Great Britain

Great Britain is seen as a late adopter to the modernist style of architecture with examples before the 1930s being a rarity. The style was adopted more during periods of post war reconstruction with functionalism and new materials providing for faster build times with more readily available materials. The style was boosted by the migration of famous German architects to Britain between 1933-36. Concrete is seen in most examples of early British modernism, key examples include Empire Swimming Pool and the Penguin Pool by Berthold Lubetkin of Tecton.
