The Werkbund was less an artistic movement than a state-sponsored effort to integrate traditional crafts and industrial mass production techniques. This idea was influenced by William Morris, who was a leader of the 19th century English Arts and Crafts Movements. Van de Velde and Muthesius expanded Morris’ ideas and proposed that form should be determined only by function and ornamentation should be eliminated.
