Glossary: Bauhaus

BAUHAUS

The Bauhaus was a school of design, architecture and craftsmanship founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar, in 1919. The ideas of the Bauhaus generated a profound influence throughout the world.

The main purpose of the teaching was to unite art and craftsmanship: the artist or architect should be also a craftsman and have experience with the qualities of the materials. They believed also that architecture should be the result of a collective effort: each craftsman should contribute with his part to the building process. Walter Gropius, Theo Van Doesburg, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Mies Van der Rohe were some of the highlighted participants of this school.
