The Brick Assembly project enables groups of students to study the real life manufacture of clay products. Special shaped bricks, such as Ibstock’s Umbra range, offer designers the opportunity to explore relief in the creation of brick surfaces. This apparently simple creation of form using the mouldable properties of clay relies on careful manipulation of the raw material and consideration of how the final product could be used.

Students plan to investigate the process of special shape brick manufacture developing a working process as they develop a new prototype using clay. They will use the workshop facilities at Parkside to explore the potential of both material and various processes. A site visit to an Ibstock Brick factory site is planned to allow comparison with current brick manufacturing processes.

After conducting our precedent studies, we split as a group in order to produce three brick designs, each aiming to create a design both aesthetically and structurally different.   Above, you will see my three brick designs, named ‘The Wave’,

Week 8 – We came across a mistake with our final mould.  We noticed that our design was on the wrong face of the brick, so we had to re-make the mould. We made it my hand using the band

Week 7 – We made our final 3 brick moulds and hand threw our bricks. To make our moulds we used plywood and jelutong wood. For two of our designs we used the CNC machine to cut out our design
