TITLE: Love Architecture: Birmingham Festival Mobile Unit
LOCATION: Various
COLLABORATORS: Birmingham Architectural Association / RIBA WM / K4 Architects
PROJECT TYPE: Design, Fabrication, Event Curation

Following the success of last year’s LA:B shop at New Street Station, Co.Lab were approached again to explore possible ways to engage the public community with the annual Love Architecture festival. The festival’s intention is to celebrate architecture – as an art form, as a profession, as part of our daily lives.

The BAA encourages the festival to interact with the wider public. To achieve this, the festival hub is devolved onto the streets of the city – travelling around from event to event and acting as a promotional item to entice others to participate.

An initial open-ended design competition during the Co.Lab School Events in May provided three original concepts to work with by undergraduate students. The discussion turned to the design of the ‘activity’ as much as the object itself with some amusing suggestions of drawing boards, to card model icons, to a photobooth.

The students then went about consulting with K4 Architects to develop the physical construction and fabricated the unit alongside the Co.Lab mentors. The unit will be available at the following venues:

Fr Jun 21 – Great Western Arcade
Sa Jun 22 – Millennium Point
Jun 24-26 – Streets of Brum
Th Jun 27 – MADE*
Fr June 28 – Millenium Point
